The IMA ETF Model portfolios are managed by Portfolio Manager Nick Field. The portfolio management approach for these models is based on our philosophy of long-term VALUE investing.
We use a proprietary valuation model to estimate the 10 year returns available on different asset classes and market segments in Australia and overseas. Then we tilt the client portfolios towards the best returns, meaning we allocate more money to those markets which offer the best value. We also try to avoid markets which look overpriced and represent poor value.
We stagger portfolio trading over time because we are able to assess long-term value, but we know we can’t pick the exact timing of market inflections.
Regularly reallocating our portfolio towards the best value opportunities over time means we are buying low and selling high. This kind of DYNAMIC asset allocation should deliver strong investment returns over the long term, but by avoiding the most overpriced markets, we also reduce the risk of large capital losses, because those are most LIKELY in markets with bubble-like conditions. As a result, we expect to deliver higher long-term returns than a FIXED asset allocation, but also with lower volatility of the portfolio value. Compared to a standard multi-asset-class portfolio, our investment approach is aiming for better risk-adjusted returns over time.
